Spotify does not officially operate in Russia

Spotify ended service in Russia on April 11, 2022, and liquidated its Russian legal entity in December 2023. As of this article’s 2026 review, it had not announced a change in that status. Reports of access through VPNs refer to unofficial workarounds such as changing account regions, paying through intermediaries or using apps outside Russia’s official app stores. Spotify has not confirmed or commented on these arrangements.

This distinction matters for artists considering the Russian market. Some Russian-language guides leave it vague, so it is useful to set out the situation clearly.

⚠️

If you expect Spotify to be your main source of income from listeners in Russia, reassess that expectation before uploading.

02

Why artists in Russia still release on Spotify

Delivering music and accessing a listener app are separate issues. Distribution to Spotify does not depend on whether its app operates in a particular country. creator sends releases to Spotify through partner delivery, and that technical route remains available.

The other question is what you can expect from that presence. It helps to look at actual listening patterns.

03

Where Russian-market listening comes from

For independent Russian-language artists, Yandex Music and VK Music account for the overwhelming majority of streams, while Spotify and Apple Music make up only a small percentage. Yandex Music and VK Music are major local streaming services.

This does not make Spotify pointless. For a newcomer without an international audience, a Spotify release in 2026 builds a presence for the future rather than immediate income. Most listening for a new artist in this market comes through Yandex Music’s personalized My Vibe recommendations and VK Music. Promotion and income expectations should reflect that audience.

How to deliver music to Spotify

Artists do not upload directly to Spotify; delivery goes through a distributor. With creator, the process is:

AudioUncompressed WAV
Cover art3000 × 3000 px square
DeliveryThrough a distributor
PitchingAt least 7 days ahead
ProfileClaim in Spotify for Artists
Recording royalties1,000+ streams over 12 months
  • Register in the dashboard and choose a plan, starting at ₽549/month.
  • Upload your WAV and cover art, then complete the metadata.
  • creator reviews the release, including its rights, usually within a day.
  • The release is sent to platforms, including Spotify, through partner delivery.

Spotify’s own requirements then apply. Prepare for them in advance to avoid time lost to another upload.

05

Spotify loudness guidance and playlist pitching

Spotify normalizes playback. Normal mode targets −14 LUFS, but that is not a file requirement or a reason to master precisely to −14 LUFS. A listener can disable normalization or select another mode. Spotify recommends a true peak no higher than −1 dBTP, and below −2 dBTP for masters louder than −14 LUFS, to reduce distortion after transcoding.

For editorial playlist pitching, the track must still be unreleased in Spotify for Artists. Allow at least 7 days before release for editorial consideration and followers’ personalized Release Radar. Distributors advise leaving 2–4 weeks to reduce the risk of missing that window.

For a new artist focused on Russia without an overseas audience, Spotify in 2026 is a future presence rather than an immediate income source.
06

The 1,000-stream threshold

Since April 2024, a track needs at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months to enter Spotify’s recording royalty pool. The threshold does not apply to publishing royalties. For a typical new track, that can take time: most releases receive considerably fewer than a thousand streams in their first months. This is a global Spotify rule, unrelated to its status in Russia, but it directly affects whether a track generates recording royalties.

07

Putting this into practice

Before you submit
  • Check your rights to the master, lyrics, beat and samples
  • Match your artist name to the existing Spotify profile
  • Schedule release at least 2–4 weeks ahead
  • After delivery, claim your Spotify for Artists profile
  • Pitch one unreleased track at least 7 days ahead
  • Avoid purchased streams and “guaranteed playlist” offers

Deliver to all available platforms, including Spotify, while building a Russian-market promotion plan around Yandex Music and VK Music, where most of that audience listens. Pitch Spotify early as well, leaving room for overseas or playlist discovery. Check LUFS and true peak before uploading, regardless of your target geography.

Upload to all platforms, including Spotify, through the creator dashboard. See the plans page for pricing and terms.
